Located at the south of San Pedro de Atacama you can find Toconao, an oasis that is also part of the Atacameños culture and contributed to the human development in the area. The presence of water without minerals allowed the development of agriculture of their population, that still keeps the farming of all kind of fruit trees like pears, plums, quinces and grapes, as well as a huge amount of vegetables.

In this town we will visit the San Lucas de Toconao church, declared a national monument in 1951 and built in 1744 which its main characteristic is its free-standing bell tower meaning that the bell tower is separated from the church. This town also has a peculiar local liparita stone architecture, a soft and white volcanic stone extracted from a quarry located 2 kilometers away of the town.

Then, we will visit Chaxa Lagoon, located at 20 kilometers away from Toconao and placed in the middle of the Salar de Atacama. This lagoon is a protected area that is part of the national reserve Los flamencos (flamingos), a beautiful lagoon where you can see flamingos and other kind of birds such as “Chorlo de la Puna”, “Playero de Baird” and “Gaviota Andina”. Also, this area allows watching and understanding the geology of Salar de Atacama, appreciating the salt layers generated by the accumulation of crystals produced by the evaporation of underground saltwater.
