Tiritiri Matangi Island is a stunning wildlife sanctuary for New Zealand’s native birds and other endemic creatures, and an important conservation project.
From the moment you step onto the island to the moment you leave, you’ll be serenaded by birdsong.
Where is it? Located 30km north east of central Auckland and just 4km from the end of the Whangaparaoa Peninsula. This is a full-day activity due to the ferry timetable and travel time from downtown Auckland.
What do I need? Plenty of water, snacks and lunch, as there are no food outlets on the island. Please wear a pair of good walking shoes. We recommend you to bring sun block, a sun hat, towel, swimwear, a light rain jacket and warm layers. Temperatures can be changed quickly regardless of the season.
This is a pest-free island. You must take all your rubbish, including leftover food, off the island with you.The Visitor Centre on the island offers complimentary tea or coffee. The island shop has cold drinks, gifts, clothing, books and island mementos.
