Il programma nel dettaglio

Visit and learn all about Edirne, the fascinating second capital of the Ottoman Empire, the sprawling empire that ruled over a large part of Europe for centuries on end.

Edirne is the westernmost city of Turkey, lying very near the borders with both Bulgaria and Greece. This magnificent city was founded by Hadrian, who baptised it for the very first time as Adrianople. This city is also known for being the place where Sinan, the most famous Ottoman architect, completed his masterpiece: the breath-taking and sky-reaching Salimiye Mosque, which is in fact so beautiful that it was recently declared a Unesco World Heritage Site.

The many opulent Ottoman sultans of the 15th century erected various splendid mosques, madrasas, baths and a variety of palaces that can still be visited in Edirne to this day. One of these sultans was Bayezid II, son of Mehmet II the Conqueror of Constantinople. Bayezid II commissioned a sprawling complex composed of a mosque, a hospital building, a minaret and a madrasa.

In our day in age, the Museum of Health, winner of numerous awards, exposes a collection of Ottoman statues made solely of wax for medical practices and a variety of artefacts from medical history. From these sites you don’t only have to take back a nice memory or a picture with you; you can purchase a variety of traditional objects such as soaps, brooms or cheese to always have a part of Ottoman history alongside you.
