Il programma nel dettaglio

Explore the famous meatpacking district of New York and witness one of the most dramatic urban transformations in recent times. The meandering, paved streets of Manhattan's meatpacking district and the old, steel rail tracks of the elevated train that runs overhead provide a glimpse back through time to an era when New York lay at the crossroads of American commerce. Although nowadays upscale restaurants and boutique clothes stores occupy many of the old meat lockers and have transformed the area into one of the most exciting destinations in the city, it is still possible to explore the industrial heritage of the city and to understand its crucial role in New York’s history.

During this three hour walking tour through the meat-packing district and along the newly opened High Line Park, you will trace the history of New York's industrial age from the 1840s to the 1940s. Your urban historian guide will take you on a journey back through time to an era when New York was the beating heart of American commerce and the meatpacking district was central to this economy.

However, one of the most fascinating aspects of this district is its dramatic fall and rise from the mid-20th century to the present day. Having fallen into a state of disrepair by the end of the 1960s that would last for three decades, the area took part in a spectacular regeneration project around the turn of the century and in 2004 was labled “New York’s most fashionable neighbourhood” by New York Magazine. Take in the upmarket shops and apartment and learn exactly what caused the dramatic turnaround in its fortunes.
