Program details
Journey through rugged lava crop on board a 4WD road-train, while learning all about the 600-year-old volcano’s fiery past. You’ll arrive at the base of the summit, and from there it’s just a short climb to the very top for epic views. Where is it? Once you arrive on Rangitoto Island, pass under the hand-carved waharoa (gateway) and make your way to the road-train parked just alongside the wharf, where you will be greeted by your ranger guide. Please notice that a reasonable level of fitness is required for the walk to the summit.
Please note there are approximately 300 boardwalk steps to the top for 360-degree views.
The volcanic Rangitoto Island is one of the most iconic landmarks in Auckland’s city skyline. Sitting majestically off the coast, Rangitoto’s distinctive symmetrical cone rises 260 metres over the Hauraki Gulf. Where is it? Rangitoto is situated about 8 km northeast of Auckland, and is connected to Motutapu Island by a causeway, so it’s possible to walk between the two. What do I need? Plenty of water, snacks and lunch, as there are no food outlets on the island. Good walking shoes, sun block and a sun hat. A light rain jacket, and warm layers. Temperatures can change quickly regardless of the season. This is a pest-free island. You must take all your rubbish, including leftover food, off the island with you.
