Program details

Embark on an unforgettable day out on Hawaii. After departing Honolulu airport you will enjoy a short scenic flight to Hilo Airport, Hawaii, where your day exploring this beautiful island begins at the Volcanoes National Park, founded in 1916 to showcase the results of 17 million years of volcanic activity.

This sacred spot for native islanders is a humbling experience for visitors too, as you watch the earth melt into rivers of lava and shift before your eyes at Kilauea Iki crater. Learn more about Hawaii's volcanic past at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory and Jagger Museum, where great plumes of hissing steam escape the shifting earth. At Thurston Lava Tube you can enter a long cave made by cooled lava, and at the Lava Tree State Park you can view the peculiar stone tree trunk moulds naturally created by the flow of the lava.

Drive through the historic town of Hilo, now a quaint and colourful setting for merchants and shopping, and head for the Rainbow Falls, a deafening 80-foot waterfall that plunges into a 100-foot wide pool from the clifftop. If you're lucky you'll find out how the falls earned their name, with a fantastic display of glittering rainbows in the spray thrown up from the waterfall making a magical end to a perfect day.
