Stroll along the vibrant Tverskaya Street, taking in the bustling atmosphere and exclusive shops. Continue to Red Square, so called because of the surrounding red brick buildings. Admire the History Museum, the Kremlin walls and the famous multicoloured onion domes of St Basil's Cathedral. Red Square is also where the Lenin Mausoleum still located, a curious relic of the Soviet Union.
Admire the rebuilt Cathedral of Christ the Saviour (Stalin had the original dynamited) and then see the world-famous Bolshoi Theatre building. Continue to the Lubyanka, where many an unfortunate prisoner passed through the hands of KGB henchmen and which is now the headquarters of its successor agency. Wander the alleyways of the historic merchants’ district Kitay-Gorod then explore the bank of the Moscow River, see the parliament (Duma) and stop at the top of the ‘Sparrow Hills’ for a superb view over the city. Pause in front of Lomonosov University to view a landmark Stalin-era skyscraper then move on to Victory Park. Finally, see the Novodevichy Convent, which inspired Tchaikovsky’s ‘Swan Lake’.
