Program details

This two-hour walking tour of the historical centre of Granada includes a visit to of the city’s most well-known landmarks, the magnificent Cathedral and Royal Chapel. As you admire the fantastic Gothic and Renaissance architecture of the two monuments, your knowledgeable local guide will explain the political and ideological reasons behind the location of these two buildings in the heart of the city after it was conquered by the Catholic Spanish armies in 1492.

The foundations of Granada Cathedral were first laid in the early 16th Century on the site of the former Nazrid Great Mosque, an event of great ideological importance in a city that until recently had been entirely Muslim. This impressive building was built in the Renaissance style and is the second largest Cathedral in Spain, its towers, dominating the city’s skyline even today. Your guide will explain the history of this fascinating building, pointing out some of its more interesting architectural details, including the unique circular capilla mayor.

The nearby Royal Chapel was built in between 1505 and 1517 as a mausoleum to house the remains of the Fernando and Isabella, the Catholic Monarchs and conquerors of Islamic Granada. This flamboyant Gothic building is the largest of its kind in the country and you can admire the marble tombs of Ferdinand and Isabella as well as those of their daughter Joan the Mad and her husband, Philip the Handsome. You shouldn’t miss the splendid ironwork and the important collection of artworks including relics, tapestries and sculptures and paintings by Spanish, Italian and Flemish masters of the 15th Century.
