Program details
Live the high life in the island’s highland villages with this excursion into what many locals feel is a vanishing Santorini. This tour will bring you to Mesa Gonia, a tiny village that’s surrounded by vineyards and is home to the island’s oldest church, the 11th century Panagia Episkopi, a work of Byzantine brilliance that is seriously photogenic. From there, we will make our way to Pyrgos, which was once Santorini’s capital. This picture-postcard town high on a mountain side boasts a Venetian castle, wonderful whitewashed churches and twisting narrow cobbled lanes. Afterwards, you’ll have the chance to sample some local wines at a winery before heading for Santorini’s star turn, Oia. Perched on a clifftop, this hip-and-happening whitewashed village with its blue-domed churches and windmills serves up spectacular views over the caldera and is famous for its sunsets. Arriving in the early evening, you’ll head along its cobbled alleys to the ruined walls of the Kastro or to a cliffside bar, where you’ll have grandstand seats for the truly spectacular sunset show. Catch it all before it vanishes.
Meeting/ pick-up point: Hotel lobby.
Start/opening time: 3pm.
