Excurstion to Alpujarras from Nerja

General information

Costa del Sol, Spain

Program details

Journey into the heart of the Alpujarras region and experience a way of life that has barely changed over the centuries.

On this half-day guided excursion, you will marvel at the rugged landscape, be enchanted by the picturesque hilltop villages and be able feast on local produce.

The Alpujarras nestles at the foothills of the Sierra Nevada and was for years a little-known secret. But thanks to the bestselling book, Driving Over Lemons, it has become a fixture on the tourist trail.

As the coach begins the climb from Nerja, you will learn about local life as you pass rustic villages and dramatic scenery.

We’ll stop at the charming mountain village of Pampaneira, some 3,000 feet above sea level, where it seems almost impossible to build a town. With its steep, cobbled streets and whitewashed houses, it is like an Aladdin's cave, full hostels, bars and a fantastic selection of gift shops offering artisan and high quality souvenirs. Drop into one of the quaint bodegas and try the region’s delicious cured hams, goat’s cheeses and marzipans, all washed down with one of the fruity local wines.

The wild, almost inhospitable countryside of the Alpujarras is one of the few remaining vestiges of a rapidly disappearing Spain. The contrast between the coast and the mountain could not be greater.
