This is one of the most all-encompassing tours City Wonders offers covering the three most important sites of Ancient Rome and the newly opened homes of Caesar Augustus and Livia. If you want the full exclusive experience in a single half-day visit., this is the ultimate option. Exploring these unbelievable historical homes and sites, your expert local guide will bring their vibrant history to life through rich and entertaining commentary. You won’t regret a moment, and neither will your photo album!
Save your valuable vacation time with advance reservations and skip-the-line access, spend over an hour inside Italy’s epic icon, the Colosseum. Learn about the enormous edifice’s frightening and bloody background. Home to gladiators, the amphitheater was the location of countless executions and theatrical performances including magnificent mock sea-battles. Explore both levels and wander around its massive circumference as you imagine what life was like: roaring crowds egging on the emperor to execute men for mere entertainment.
You’ll also be escorted along the “Via Sacra” or “Sacred Way” as your expert, English-speaking guide walks your small group through the Roman Forum. This area once sprang with festivals and triumphal processions as Roman armies returned from war. See the old moneylender’s shop, Caesar’s Temple and the house of the Vestal Virgins – once you find out what their duties were, will you agree they had the best job in Ancient Rome? You’ll have to visit to find out.
You couldn’t be planning your trip to Rome at a more perfect time. For years, archaeologists, historians and restoration experts were the only people allowed into the over 2,000 year old homes of Emperor Caesar Augustus and his wife, Empress Livia. Painstakingly bringing the colorful frescoes back to their original glory, millions of dollars and countless hours went into preparing this site for the public. However, so newly opened and so historically important, only a select few are permitted to walk the still-dusty Domus (word for the homes of ancient Italy’s most elite). This is your chance to be one of privileged few. Built in first-century B.C., Rome’s first Emperor’s home was expertly erected with a spectacular view of the Circus Maximus atop Palatine Hill. In fact, the word “palace” comes from “Palatine” because of these ornate residential residences.
You’ll be in awe as you quite literally travel through time, admiring the well-preserved mosaics, columns, frescoes and the other decadent decorations of these private noble dwellings. One of the most famous and beloved Roman rulers, Augustus is attributed to the creation and consolidation of the entire empire (despite his rivalry with Antony and Cleopatra). Livia, his third wife, was the love of his life and trusted advisor. You’ll see how her adjoining home reflects his affection and dedication to her and their family.
Rome’s most popular tourist attractions can be pretty hectic. Thousands of people clamoring to buy tickets and see everything they can in limited time. That’s why we’ve planned the entire experience for you. Enjoy your time in Italy the way you imagined it – relaxing and inspiring. We provide skip-the-line access, reserved tickets, and an expert, local, English-speaking guide (plus, audio headsets so you can always hear the commentary, if you so desire.) so you experience these ancient sites in the best possible way.
