Program details

Leave the hustle and bustle of Barcelona far behind you as you ascend high into the Pyrenees and immerse yourself in nature in the heartland of Cataluña. Climb the charming rack railway to the Valley of Nuria, a picturesque world of high mountain peaks, tranquil lakes and green pastures. Explore mediaeval villages where time seems to have stood still and let yourself be seduced by the tranquility of the Romanesque monastery of Santa Maria de Ripoll, the family mausoleum for the Counts of Barcelona. After a day of exploring nature, treat yourself to a tasting of traditional Catalan cheeses and meats, washed down with delicious local wines.

Lying 2,000 meters above sea level, The Valley of Nuria has always held culture significance to accompany its natural beauty. According to tradition, Saint Giles crafted an image of the Virgin Mary here, which he was forced to hide when fleeing the Roman persecution of the Christians. When a pilgrim subsequently found the image he built a chapel in its honour, which remains an important pilgrim spot to this day.

Admire the intricacies of the monastery of Santa Maria de Ripoll, founded by Count Wilfred the Hairy in the 9th century. Set in the stunning mountain valleys, the interior is just as spectacular, featuring exquisite columns depicting mythological themes.

The only way to finish this trip is by sampling the freshest produce of the region, including a delicious platter of cheeses and meats and a selection of enticing Catalonian wines.
