Edinburgh Castle was part of many historical conflicts including the Wars of Scottish Independence in the 14th century and the Jacobite Rising in 18th century and it has been besieged, on several occasions. The most notable St Margaret's Chapel from the early 12th century is regarded as the oldest building in Edinburgh.
