After an informative introduction to the cultural attractions of Berlin’s famous Museum Island, begin your tour with a trip to the Pergamon Museum to admire its many highlights. Marvel at the Market Gates of Miletus, the Ishtar Gate and many more ancient artefacts found inside. Designed to very precise specifications by Alfred Messel and Ludwig Hoffman, the Pergamon was built between 1910 and 1930 and is home to some monumental structures, painstakingly relocated to Berlin. Included in its various exhibitions are the Middle East Museum and the Museum of Islamic Art.
The story behind the Neues Museum is a tale in itself. Severely damaged by bombing in the Second World War, it was abandoned until the Berlin Wall came down and finally reopened to the public in 2009. Admire its many impressive exhibitions, focusing on prehistoric times, early civilization and the undoubted star attraction, its Egyptian collection featuring the stunning bust of Nefertiti.
