Program details
You travel by Stirling and on to Doune Castle, set of Monty Python's Holy Grail, for a photo stop. From here you continue north into the Highlands with an afternoon stop by Kilchurn Castle, magnificently situated at the head of Loch Awe.Turning south you visit the white-washed 18th Century town of Inveraray, home to the Duke of Argyll's castle, before continuing over the spectacular ''Rest and be Thankful'' pass to Loch Lomond, stopping at the conservation village of Luss, set on its ''bonny, bonny banks''. From here you return to Edinburgh, stopping briefly under Stirling castle.
Capture the spirit of the Western Highlands and explore some of its most atmospheric Lochs and Castles.
Kilchurn Castle is a ruined 15th century structure on a rocky peninsula of Loch Awe. Access to the Castle is sometimes restricted by higher-than-usual levels of water. It was the ancestral home of the Campbells of Glen Orchy. The castle was built on a small island barely larger than the castle itself. The castle was usually accessed by means of an underwater or low lying causeway. Today the fortress is connected to the mainland as the water level was altered in 19th century. At times, when the level rises, the castle becomes inaccessible.
