Program details

Discover the ancient city of Troy, one of the most important archaeological sites in the world and scene of the famous siege.

After an early start we'll drive southwards towards Troy, making a brief halt for breakfast before stopping for lunch at the coastal town of Eceabat. Then we'll take a 20-minute ferry ride across the Dardanelles to Canakkale where we'll board the bus for the drive to the Unesco World Heritage Site of Troy.

On the one hour walking tour of the site, you'll learn all about the fascinating history of the area, one of the oldest continuously inhabited sites in the area, how it started up as a small hamlet in neolithic times before growing to become one of the most powerful Bronze Age cities in the world. You'll hear how it was successively invaded, conquered, destroyed and rebuilt by all the usual suspects including Hittites, Greeks, Romans and Byzantines before finally falling into obscurity and ruin. It was then rediscovered by pioneering German archaeologist Schliemann in the 19th Century. The learn all about the Trojan Wars, immortalised by Homer, with beautiful Helen, impetuous Paris, brave Achilles and the wooden horse that has now become the symbol of the site. On the site there are the remains of the Odeon, Roman Bath, Temple of Athena, Bouleuterion or Parliament, city walls and houses and of course the giant, wooden replication of the Trojan Horse. After the tour we will return to Canakkale to take the ferry back across the Dardanelles, arriving at Istanbul at about 11pm.
