Program details
Action and adventure are the order of the day with this exhilarating full day trip from Chiang Mai. Hang out with Asian elephants, visit a hill tribe village and enjoy a bamboo rafting experience and there’s even more. This is the ultimate northern Thailand field trip.
First stop is the Chiang Dao Elephant Training Centre, where these intelligent craetures live uncaged in the leafy jungle. See how the elephant’s handlers, called mahouts, train them using ancient techniques. Watch the elephants taking their morning bath in the Ping River. All clean and spruced up, you can have a closer encounter with them during feeding time and offer them bananas and sugar cane. Next you will see how the elephants carry logs with their trunks. Soon, the elephants will be carrying you. Really! Settle into the elephant’s howdah, a rustic carriage that rests on his back. For 90 minutes, the elephant will be your means of transportation, just like the kings of Siam. Trek through the jungle to the Lisu hill tribe village and along the Ping River. Bring your camera to show your friends back home your sweet ride.
Afterwards, savour a wonderful meal in the camp’s restaurant, before taking a languid bamboo raft ride along the Ping River, surrounded by forest scenery and brilliantly coloured butterflies and beetles.
On the return trip to Chiang Mai, stop by an orchid farm. A feast for the eyes awaits you with the vast varieties of orchids and hybrids in bloom as well as a fascinating demonstration of orchid reproduction and cultivation.
Meeting/pick-up point: Hotel lobby.
Duration: Full day.
Start or opening time: 7.45am.
