Program details
Walk through the pages of history with this tour of the Battlefields of Somme, the scenario of some of the fiercest battles of World War I. This journey provides you with an unparalleled opportunity to reflect on the horrors of war, or even be grateful for not living in that time. But it is also practically obligatory for anybody interested in learning more about the fascinating development of World War I, a subject on which countless books have been written throughout the century.
On this day of remembrance, you will discover the part of France which most severely suffered the terrible violence of the Great War. Explore the very landscapes which are even today pockmarked and scarred by these bloody battles: the Somme Battlefields and its most significant sites. Cemeteries, memorials and other sombre constructions bear witness to the monstrosities which here occurred.
See the Lochnagar Mine Crater Memorial, at La Boisselle, the scar left by the detonation of what at that time was considered the largest mine ever detonated. Meander through the areas of Poziere and Thipeval, both of which saw savage combats, and also visit the Beaumont-Hamel site and the Newfoundland Memorial. Another point of interest is the Australian National memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, a location that features in all Australian history books. Complete your day with an incursion into the Historial de la Grande Guerre, one of the single most important museums of the First World War.
