Immerse yourself in the world of Athens’ underground secrets as you explore the fascinating treasures of Ancient Greece that were discovered during the construction of its expansive metro system. During its construction, archeologists worked alongside the developers and were able to recover more than 50,000 ancient items of archeological interest. These intriguing finds are housed at museums throughout the metro system and this guided tour visits the four most important sites; Acropolis, Syntagma, Monastiraki and Keramikos.

Begin your tour at the world famous Acropolis metro station where excavations carried out over an area of 2500m2 and reveled that this area had been used as far back as the 3rd millennium BC through to the Byzantine times. Archeological digs revealed many ancient graves, houses, roads and baths that are on display for you to admire.

Take the metro to Syntagma station, where the excavations brought up a sculpture foundry dating from the Classic Era, a cemetery dating back to sub-Mycenaean and Byzantine times and a spectacular baths complex dating back to the Roman times. Continue to Monastraki and learn about the embedded bed of Iridanos River, one out of the most significant findings of the dig. It was confirmed that the area had been in constant use from the Mycenaean Era up to the Modern times. A vast array of workshops, graves, water supply and sewage systems were revealed which were essential to the ancient city.

Finish this fascinating tour at Kerameikos station and witness a section of the most significant cemetery of the ancient city of Athens. Over one thousand graves dating back to the beginning of 7th century BC and two burial grounds from the Peloponnesian War were discovered here, causing a stir in the world of archaeology.
