Program details
See Athens in a day with this comprehensive four-hour walking tour of the city’s most important sites. From the modern day to ancient times, zigzag your way across this fascinating city and back through time with your knowledgeable and entertaining guide.
Make a brief stop at the Syntagma Metro station where ancient pottery is exhibited for commuters to admire, and then head outside to see the impressive parliament building and the Evzones. These bodyguards of the president wear pom-pom shoes and frilly white shirts, and have become emblematic of Greek identity. If you’re lucky, you’ll catch the changing of the guard, which takes place every hour. Next stop is the National Gardens, the green lung of Athens where you can enjoy a short stroll in the shade. From the gardens, wander down the tree-lined Herod Atticus Street and see the heavily guarded president’s residence and former palace.
Next flex your muscles for some pictures at the marble stadium of Athens, where the 1896 Olympic Games were held. Visit the beautiful classical temple of Olympian Zeus, with its huge columns. Then cross the boundary between the Greek and Roman parts of the city, marked by the Roman triumphal gateway, Hadrian's Arch. Explore the narrow shady streets of pretty Plaka among antique sellers and organ grinders before checking out two of the most important cathedrals in Athens. Enjoy some free time before heading back to the metro station and your hotel.
