Program details

Grab your credit card, don your over-sized sunglasses and make like a celebrity with a private shopping tour of Athens. Your friendly guide will meet you outside the Monastiraki metro station, where Monastiraki Square has recently reopened after extensive renovations. Spot the new multi-coloured mosaic reflecting the many ethnicities of the area, and look down at the ancient river of Athens through the new viewing window.

In the shadow of the Parthenon, stroll through bustling Plaka with its many tiny boutiques and antiques shops. The narrow streets are full of surprises, from cheerful organ-grinders and roast chestnut sellers to Orthodox monks making their way down to Athens’ main cathedral. Giousouroum, the Sunday flea market, is held on Plateia Avissinias, the central square in Monastiraki, and is a real highlight for eagle-eyed bargain hunters. There’s nothing you can’t find among the jumbled piles of treasure at the heart of the old bazaar. Antique furniture, reproductions of old masters, brass telescopes, vintage phones, records, shoes, clothes – the list is endless and draws crowds of Sunday strollers and shrewd collectors. Don’t be afraid to haggle!

Your guide will show you the highlights and then you still have plenty of time to explore this wonderland on your own. Find a shady tree to sit underneath while you read the paper. Gaze up above the wonky terracotta roofs to the incredible Acropolis towering above. Or just take it all in while sipping a frappé in one of the many cafes and enjoy the lively atmosphere.
