Program details
Seek adventure beyond the city limits of Athens and see a bit more of ancient Greece with this half-day tour to ancient Corinth. Among the attractions you’ll enjoy are scenic views of the Saronic Gulf and the chance to stop and take in the marvel that is the Corinth Canal.
Leave Athens behind and drive southwest until you reach the Corinth Canal. The channel which was completed in 1893 connects the Gulf of Corinth with the Saronic Gulf in the Aegean Sea. It cuts through the narrow Isthmus of Corinth and separates the Peloponnesian peninsula from the Greek mainland, thus effectively making an island of the mainland. Measuring 6.4kms (4 miles) in length and just 21 metres (70 ft) wide at its base, the canal is impassable for most modern ships and is now mainly used by tourists and recreational sailors.
Continue to the ancient town of Corinth, which is believed to have been occupied by humans as long ago as 6,500 BC, and that the settlement acted as a centre of trade. The remains of the City, which include the Agora (market place) and Apollo's Temple (sixth century BC) clearly show how rich and important Corinth was in ancient times. The city is also significant to Christians as it is the place where St Paul lived and preached for almost two years. A short stop at the site of the Ancient Port of Cehries, where St Paul disembarked, will conclude the visit before returning to Athens.
