Program details

Take a scenic trip away from Athens to the southernmost tip of Attica, Cape Sounion. The site of ancient ruins of the temple of Poseidon, god of the sea in classical Greek mythology, it is a most picturesque location on the Aegean Sea.

Leave the bustling city of Athens behind and enjoy a wonderful drive along the scenic coastal road known as the Riviera of Attica. You will be afforded a splendid view of the Saronic Gulf while you travel in comfort and pass through some of Athen’s most beautiful beachside suburbs such as Glyfada, Vouliagmeni, Varkiza, Lagonissi and Anavissos.

According to Mythology, Poseidon had his palace in the depths of the sea and his temple on a windswept rock rising above the Aegean Sea. The remaining marble pillars of the Temple of Poseidon are positioned on a cliff surrounded on three sides by water and enjoy a magnificent sea view. They are one of the most beautiful monuments of the classical times to have survived to the present day. There are 12 white remaining Doric columns which make stunning stark contrast with the azure waters below. The poet Lord Byron also appreciated the area and carved his name on the marble which may still be seen today. The position of Cape Sounion was also of strategic importance in ancient times so the Athenians established a small naval base and a fortress to protect the ships carrying grain to Piraeus, the port of Athens.
