Program details

Athens is famed for its history and museums but the city’s guilty pleasure is shopping – and this trip into the heart of the city for a bit of souvenir hunting promises to be the retail therapy.Visit the colourful Monastiraki flea market and the buzzing Athens Central Market, highlight of the lively Athinas market district.

Athens Central Market is a feast for the senses: chaotic, noisy and utterly charismatic. Sausages and fresh meat hang above you, and delicious fresh Aegean fish is laid out on ice in front of you. There are baskets of all shapes and sizes crammed with fruit, vegetables and exotic spices. Grab a bag of sticky fresh figs, some creamy feta and some juicy olives for the perfect local lunch. Monastiraki flea market is a real highlight for eagle-eyed bargain hunters. Jumbled piles of treasure such as vintage phones, records, shoes, clothes and battered old trumpets await at the heart of the old bazaar. There’s nothing you can’t find here. Push through the crowds of Sunday strollers and shrewd collectors and don’t be afraid to haggle!

Then step back in time just around the corner with a visit to the Doric columns and palm trees of the ancient Roman market. Take in the peaceful neighbouring mosque and visit the Tower of the Winds where the ancient Athenians went to tell the time. Discover 2,500 years of barter and trade in this ancient market city with this walking tour of commercial Athens.
